OT: The World Taekwondo League

Tae Kwon Do, for those that are not aware, is an Olympic sport. The object is to score points via kicking or punching someone to a designated area on their equipment (padding). One normally gets two points for a clean shot to the head and one point for a substantial hit to the body. A bout is 3-4 rounds, a round being of two minute duration. Unlike boxing, kick boxing, and the like, rounds are usually fast and furious and you get winded really fast. Having broken two big toes and my wrist sparring, I can attest to just how brutal the sport can be. But it's fun!

My sons and I have been fortunate enough to train with guys from Korea who are all world champions. For some reason, they decided to settle here in Connecticut and open a few dojangs (centers). Thanks to them, my oldest son swept all the gold medals in the 2002 CT State Championships for the highest belt color short of black for his age group (forms, breaking board, and sparring).

These masters have also just put together the World Taekwondo League and will be performing their inaugural meet at Madison Square Garden. The event will also later be broadcast on CBS TV.
