Jerome,
I agree with some of what you are saying. Israel certainly doesnt need more aid. They need peace, perhaps not the peace of the brave, pehaps the peace of the tired. Particularly disturbing to me is the pandering of the right to Jewish voters as well to Christian Fundamentalists by Tom Delay and Dick Armey. The worst thing for US foreign policy in that area would be for Israel to unnecessarily expand its borders. In time, if the Palestinians refuse to talk, this very well might occur but for now the US/GB/Saudi/Pakistani axis of goodness needs Peace with security and a palestinian state on most(95%) of the west bank. I have been watching the news carefully again. Arafat hasnt changed at all--calling the israelis nazis is not positive but if you check the body language of other Pals, they seem to have learned the lesson that when an Infitada includes homocide bombers, the Israelis will react like the US did on 9/11 with overwhelming brute force. So the guy who put his impremature on the bombers does seem like the emperor who has lost his clothes.
I am encouraged by hearing Pals talk of the bravery of Pal fighters in jenin as opposed to the whining talk of mad up massacres. They fought with antiquated weapons and fought the Israelis to a standoff until the bulldozers moved in. From battles like this, the seeds of peace arise. It happened this way with the egyptians too. And there was a cnn piece last night where a buddy of sharon was interviewed and implied that the world may be surprised by and aggressive Sharon bid for peace. He referred to sharon as i did yesterday as a possible de Gaulle.
