March saw the highest monthly sequential increase in worldwide sales of semiconductors since April 1986, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Chip sales in March totaled $10.8 billion, a 7.2 percent increase from the $10 billion level reached in February.

"The sales increase was dominated by a record 82.4 percent sales rise in the DRAM market, with essentially flat sales in other product areas as forecasted," said George Scalise, SIA president, in a statement. "The DRAM sales are a result of increased demand and price increases from the depressed levels of 2001."

Quarterly growth was 5.6 percent, indicating that inventory build-up has been worked through and product demand is now beginning to pick up, Scalise said.

The SIA expects the second quarter to see single digit sales growth, with stronger growth rates in the second half of the year. For 2002, the semiconductor industry will see modest but sustained overall growth, he said.

Using the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics’s (WSTS) global sales report (GSR), a three-month moving average of sales activity, all regions experienced growth, except Japan, which was flat.

On a month-to-month basis, all regions saw growth, with the Unites States reporting the least at 3.6 percent. Asia/Pacific led the sales increase in March over February, with a 10.4 percent increase. Europe and Japan grew 7.7 percent and 5.7 percent each, respectively. During March, growth occurred uniformly across most product sectors, the SIA said.
