AMD's early 2000 roadmap shows sledgehammer coming out sometime in 2001 (the box covers the whole year).

So if you interpret the box like others here have suggested -- the last day of 2001, and you interpret it simply as 'hammer' (rather than strictly as 'sledge'), hammer is a year late. However, change either of those assumptions and it becomes much closer to the year and a half figure being bandied about.

fyodor - What exactly is the basis of this claim? Is the reference to the current Hammer chip, or to the abandoned K8 project? (which was canned rather early in development).

Here is one of the early AMD roadmaps, published by Anand in 2000, clearly showing Sledgehammer slated for early to mid-2001 introduction.
It is an AMD slide, reproduced by Anand.
Note that the device, SLEDGEHAMMER, is clearly called out in the slide.
Now, late 2002 is at least a 1 1/2 year slip from ealry 2001 - no?
