Number Of Russian Internet Users Nearly Doubled Last Year

MOSCOW (AP)--The number of Russian Internet users nearly doubled in 2001 from the previous year to more than 18 million people, according to a report released Friday.
Of that number, 8 million are regular Internet users, said the Russian Nonprofit Center for Internet Technologies said. A majority of the users are younger than 34 years old, and men make up 59% of those on the Internet.

Use is also by far concentrated in the capital Moscow, which alone makes up 57.2% of use. St. Petersburg is next at 9.1%. However, there has also been an increase in use in other Russian regions because of more economic development there, the report said.

Internet use is still considered a luxury in Russia, although Internet cafes and local access has grown in recent years. Other surveys have found that many Russians have never used a computer.
