Deuba is certain to highlight the assault, the deadliest in the Maoists' six-year insurgency, to US President George W. Bush on Tuesday as proof the impoverished kingdom can quash the rebels with sufficient help.

"Prime Minister Deuba will explain to Mr Bush the success of the army and will seek financial and material support from the US to combat the rebels," a source in the cabinet told AFP.

The Bush administration has asked Congress to authorize 20 million dollars in military aid to Nepal for its crackdown on the rebels, who are staunchly anti-American and anti-Indian.
