I thought that the the 'people' referred to were the 'militia'

There are some people who interpret it that way.

"the right of a well-regulated militia to bear arms...", or is that a misquote?

It is. A well-regulated militia is mentioned in the amendment but the right is "the right of the people". The whole amendment is "A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."

There are no over-riding universal rights.

I disagree but this is more a matter of philosophy then law or science. No easy way to convince other people on this type of subject. (Not that to many people are convinced about anything by someone's post on the internet.)

Regardless of your rights to life and to pursue happiness, if you're trapped in a vacuum the former is no more, and the latter IMO irrelevant...

Saying you have a right to life is only saying that it is wrong if someone takes it away from you, that they are abusing your rights when they kill you. It is not saying that you will live forever or that anyone will respect your right to life.
