Elmer, I have been quite surprised with Intel's performance. They have really succeeded in responding to the AMD threat, but when you think about it, this is not the first time they have done so.

- Several years ago, AMD lowered prices on their K6 processors, and created the <$1000 market. Intel responded with Covington Celeron, but performance was atrocious, and AMDroids cheered for Intel's defeat. Then Intel rushed out the Mendocino core, and saved the day, thoroughly reclaiming the performance crown.

- AMD later introduces the Athlon processor in 1999, and Intel falls behind in performance with Katmai. In short order, Intel migrates their processor line to .18u, and integrates the L2 cache on the die, thus creating Coppermine and reclaiming the performance crown yet again.

- And recently, AMD pushed forward with aggressive .18u manufacturing to move Athlon frequencies close to the Pentium 4. So Intel comes out with Northwood, and is able to push frequencies even farther. Intel is now 800MHz, or 46% ahead of AMD's top frequency, and almost 12 months (and counting) ahead in .13u manufacturing. Once again, the performance advantage goes to Intel, even with their "dud" of a processor.

It seems that when competition is the worst, Intel steps up to the plate, and hits a home run. They have so much momentum, that they are continuing to push schedules closer, and release products earlier. It's an unprecedented level of performance, and their engineers should be applauded.

Can't wait to see the reviews Monday.
