Re: I suspect that off the shelf processors just don't have the horsepower for that type of application

The only uses Intel could find for their last "Itanium", was in NICs, SCSI controllers, and printers. Considering that the fastest i960 Intel has shipped so far runs at 100 mhz, I think a 500mhz Alchemy chips will do just fine.

The arrival of several members of the AnyFlow family in the next year will give MMC one of the broadest and deepest layers of network-specific functions in the communication-IC industry. Indeed, MMC says, the AnyFlow processors eliminate any need for customers to look at general-purpose network coprocessors like the Intel i960 or embedded MIPS cores.

Extend Your Server CapabilitiesThe ForeRunner 200E series from MarconiTMis a set of 155 Mbps asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network interface cards (NICs) designed for mid-range server and workstation environments. Based on an advanced application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology, with programmable firmware and an Intel i960 coprocessor, each ForeRunner 200E series NIC is tuned to the particular input/output (I/O) architecture of the host computer.
