<Why do you think religions are so successful?>

We derived from chimps and live in alpha male societies, dependent on groups, fearful of death, and we have imaginations and the ability to ask "Why?" though with limited ability to answer the question.

When the leading males give orders, we comply [or become human sacrifices]. There has been millions of years of training and genetic selection for compliance with alpha males.

The Mullahs give edicts and Papally Infallible rules and who is going to give a counterpoint? If they say the earth is flat and the universe circles us, then that's how it is and any smart-aleck Galileo or Socrates or any other potential defiant types will soon be shown the exit.

As you wrote: <We do have free will. But people don't know what to do with it. They prefer to follow scripts. They prefer comfortable slavery. They prefer security. They prefer what's predictable.>

I'm not sure about "prefer" - they mostly don't have much choice. What free will we have lives in very narrow boundaries.
