I don't see how competition is good.

When a technology is crossing the chasm or in the bowling alley, one of the big obstacles to its wide acceptance is that it is new and unknown, thus unproven. Conservative mainstreeters won't buy that kind of technology, no matter how good the promises. But, get several big players offering a solution and the market is validated ... if IBM thinks it is worth offering, it must be real, right? So, instead of having to convince someone that ERM is worth doing at all, Siebel can pitch to someone who already believes it is worth doing and merely has to demonstrate that they have the best solution. Having a dominant position among those competitors certainly helps.
