Dan, "Or, just buy AMD chips instead of Intel chips, and save yourself thousands or millions in software costs. Software costs that gain you nothing except the ability to run your existing programs at full speed on Intel's new chips."

I fail to see any reason for such a statement. Any CPU
core stalls when waiting for memory. Two cores would
stall either while taking more silicon area than a
single core with Hyper-Threading.

"Aye, there's the rub. Not a matter of re-compiling, but one of creating a new structure and execution flow for the application, then re-writing the application following the new design."

I worded it that it would "require thorough re-thinking and re-engineering of all individual applications." This apparently
means somewhat more than a simple matter of re-compiling.
However, if the trend towards dual-processors will
continue, this job will be eventually done anyway, and Intel
will have an instant advantage in performance and die
size compared to any "true" dual-processor implementations.

"AMD's new chips already run your existing programs at full speed."
What do you mean? Which chips?

If this thing does start to turn, it could turn hard:

Short Interest
As of 8-Apr-2002
Shares Short 21.2M
Percent of Float 8.5%
Daily Volume 4.55M

Shares Outstanding 341,243,008
Institutional Ownership (%) 50.50

Those 21 million short sold shares could be tough to cover if this thing starts to head back up. That's approaching a week's sales.

Now, now, Dan3, you are on INTC holy ground here...Tread very, very lightly or the wrath of the "one who knows", the "truth in our midst" the "one who doesn't lie" will be upon you!!!
