Monica:

"combjelly - x86-64 Linux isn't running anything except a few AMD bouncing ball demonstrations."
You know this, how?
Have you seen it run anything else?"

You are sounding like Paul did in the summer of '99, in the interval between, DM's June Athy intro, and Athy's exceedingly strong consumer acceptance in the ensuing 1000 days...DM has just introduced Opteron and, Monica, the next 1000 days have the potential for AMD marketshare growth at an accelerated rate from that witnessed in the just completed 1000 day Athy "epoch"...You are now verging on entering the 1000 day "opteron" epoch, an epoch that may change the cpu world by more than you ever imagined possible...(In summer of '99, we were told by the same INTC crowd still singing in our midst today, that Athy would never compete with p3, that's right, the self described ""truth", "no lie", guy" as well as others...now the same self described ""truth", "no lie" guy" is spinning about debilitating Dresden yields at a time when AMD is shipping record number of CPU's...and you are mesmorised by the tune...be careful that you are not being led to the precipice..."Opteron", I'd guess, may be much, much more formidable than the INTC choir can imagine, just as Athy far exceeded, the INTC choirs worst nightmare, in its superb architecture, market acceptance and price/performance advantage)...You might ask yourself, just where is p3 now anyway, just as you may be asking yourself at some point in the next 1000 day "epoch", once "opteron" is unveiled and arm's length awards (not unlike Athy's 100 or so awards) are bestowed upon it, where is p4 now??? (I just haven't seen too many awards bestowed upon p4 other than by the self described ""truth", "no lie" guy", but I do expect to see many, many awards bestowed upon Opteron when it arrives...

"Have you seen it run anything else?"

Me, personally? No, but I've never seen a Xeon run anything either. Considering that the compiler and binutils tools exist, if it isn't running KDE and it's whole suit of programs it's because of laziness. Likewise for any of the open sourced Linux software, including Apache. Since there has been a 64 bit Linux port to the Alpha for a while, there is a long list of applications, some commercial, that are already 64 bit ready for the Hammer.
