The connection between the two is tenuous.

Not bad but some make it worse; the close geographical connection makes the violence worse for the occupying country.

As for the first, France as an old colonial power, the way the Israelis are trying to extend the settlements, occupying ever more portions of the West Bank, creating an economy which is/was dependent on the Israeli economy, etc. was a classic colonial strategy.

And last, the nationalism issue is clearly quite similar.
