"Isn't faith in science an oxymoron?"

If you accept anything without even the most basic understanding of the principles I would call it faith.

"The whole point of science is that it is proven or provable."

Well not really. I have seen a lot of top scientists fudge results in order to get grants or push a paper to publication to raise money. In another funnier case I saw one get denounced as a spy and communist, letters on official company stationary were written to get him deported because he supposedly plagiarized some results.

"Faith is appropriate for religion, not science, because it isn't provable.

Not for the uninitiated. Scientists/capitalists are for sale to the highest bidder and market themselves accordingly, there is no ivory tower here. Don't put scientists on the same pedestal that Catholics put priests on.

"The critical thinking question applies when people treat pseudoscience as science."

Many leading edge minds have been burned on the stake after being denounced by other scientists as expert witnesses for the Church. Even Curie was ridiculed for the experiments that led to the discovery of penicillin. Then again ridicule is important to the scientific process.

"If they want to treat astrology as a religion and have faith in it, let them. If they think it's like biology or astronomy, then they need some ejucat'n."

We accept evolution without ever witnessing one successful mutation. We therefore accept evolution on our observation of the fossil record and a big dose of faith.

The ten traits that make a great scientist will also if channeled in another direction make a great cult leader, they are;

1. FOCUS
2. PREPAREDNESS
3. CONVICTION
4. PERSEVERANCE
5. CREATIVITY
6. CURIOSITY
7. RESILIENCE
8. RISK TAKING
9. INDEPENDENCE
10. A SENSE OF HIGHER PURPOSE.

You just keep "believing" that, its kinda cute. Any way, it might keep the boogie men a little more at bay if you substitute the word observable for provable. Nothing is provable.
