If you don't understand the process behind the discovery and manufacture of penicillin, contract an infection, take penicillin in the hopes you will be cured, you are taking it on faith. That's not faith in science. If you are not expert in a certain science, you rely on the experts. You may be taking on faith that the system that produces the experts works, but you're not taking the science on faith. The science of penicillin is what it is. The people who translate that for us lay folk are another matter.
