"Yes - Linux on Alpha was a smashing success."

Not really. But it was the processor that pushed most of the Linux software to be 64 bit clean. As a result, almost all of the Linux software is ready for the Hammers. Not that you could actually understand that, but such is life...

Dear Monica:

How many 64 bit applications are running on Power4? IBM is selling Linux on their most powerful 64 bit RISC hardware and there are plenty of 64 bit applications running on it and customers are buying and running these. I know this for a FACT! And all it takes is a recompile for them to be available for Opterons. It is one of the reasons why people like Linux. MS makes it hard to cross hardware platforms, but Linux (and UNIX before them) makes it quite easy to do.
