Dan3, RE: Whatever the profits were, they showed up as earnings from investment activities during some past quarter - and were included in quarterly profits. If they were of that magnitude, then Dell's computer business hasn't been doing nearly as well as everyone thinks - they just borrowed profits from current and future quarters to pad earnings in past quarters.

I don't think that is accurate.

Just as the "loss" from the most recent option exercise only appears on the balance sheet and not the income statement, similarly the "profit" that Dell gleaned by buying back shares at below market prices in years gone by also didn't appear on the income statement.
