ttw - a derivative is any financial instrument which is based on an underlaying.
Not only futures, but also options on futures, pure options, swaps, warrants, cash-for-difference, spreads,.... I would even add mutual funds into the derivatives as most in their brochure claim to mimic an index and as such also "derive" their value.
