Telstra claims its GSM mobile-phone customers that's most of them are enjoying enhanced sound quality, reduced background noise making conversation generally easier.

Voice-quality enhancement equipment from Tellabs of the US has been placed in Telstra's mobile exchanges, reducing background noise by a claimed 65 per cent, or 10 decibels, Telstra says.

On top of that, new sound-level control equipment evens out voice volume, helping GSM customers to be heard even if they speak softly or scream down the line. Telstra adds that its CDMA customers enjoy similar noise suppression services already.
