The main benefit of Java over other programming languages is its cross platform compatibility. Without Java, you would not be able to run the same application on any computer regardless of the operating system. Java paved the way to many new features on the Internet as it allowed companies to deliver applets without worrying about the O/S running on the target. The browser has a built in compiler that generates machine code for the end user's O/S. Before Java, you simply couldn't do this, and this capability has greatly expanded content on the Internet, as well as sales of Java development tools. Like everything else, programming languages don't have an infinite life cycle. However, I believe that Sun is smart enough to be in a leadership role in its eventual replacement.
