Who ever said that long running taxpayer-paid subsidies were done for the benefit of the country?

They are pork programs... done for the benefit of the recipients, and they damage, not benefit the nation.

Corporate welfare is an example of 'crony capitalism', and eventually results in major damage such as that seen in Japan over the past decade.
