Being #1 or beating anyone isn't a prerequisite to anything. Doing better overall IS. It's ok to be #2 or 3, as long as you have a strong business.

I can see several areas where cost cutting will create compelling situations from a price point. This should allow them to take advantage of improved services efforts.

BTW, there is no guarantee that Dell has won the day. Dell has alot of things they need to fix before their "superior" model is proclaimed the clear winner. Both CPQ and HWP sold via the web, and will likely continue to do so. However, there is NO DOUBT that brand presence at brick and mortar stores is highly valuable. Creating additional channels for revenues is how you make money. Dell doesn't really have many channels, and they can only improve their situation with cost cutting...which they have done just about all they can at this point (hence the end of the price wars). They don't have the range of items, services, or programs that HPQ does.
When I said HPQ could be the next IBM, it wasn't meant to say they'd necessarily beat IBM...though that is obviously a goal. However, there's no reason why they couldn't. IBM is at the same place it was 10 years ago - bloated, overgrown and engaging in overreach. We'll see if their new CEO is another Gerstner. Who would've guessed Gerstner was a Gerstner? Most people didn't.
