Jay, Re: But this week AMD will also notify an additional 200 workers at a newer facility that their jobs will be eliminated.

It looks like AMD is serious about bringing costs down (and thus break-even revenue), even beyond the previous goal which involved only the old fabs IIRC. So I consider this to be good news -- except of course for the persons involved who lose their jobs. (but they will probably find quickly new jobs because of their qualifications)

re:<AMD to cut about 800 workers>
I expect to see another announcement of AMD job cuts in Malaysia. Back in November they announced a 15% workforce reduction, here's a quote from the 9/25/2001 press release:

These changes will result in the reduction of approximately 2,300 direct manufacturing and related administrative support positions, or approximately 15 percent of the Company's worldwide workforce, by the end of the second quarter of 2002. Approximately 1,000 of these positions are associated with closing Fabs 14 and 15 in Austin, Texas. The balance [1,300] of the reductions will result from reducing and restructuring activities primarily in Penang, Malaysia.
