These few hundred people are screwed forever in exchange for an extremely short term stock pop of twenty cents per share. Yay, AMD.

I don't think most of them will be screwed forever.

Also its more then just a 20 cent per share pop in AMD. Its lowering costs. If AMD doesn't need the employees anymore it just makes sense not to let them go. Not only because it helps AMD but also because its better if people work in areas where they are needed and can be productive.

Just a winding down of the Y2k bubble. Before it's over...the economy will be rolled back to pre-1998. Comapnies will continue to go under. Those that cut work forces way back and survive will eventually hire some back. Looks like the days of guaranteed high paying jobs right out of college are over...back to the past. Many people who thought they were retired will make it worse. Unemployment will continue to rise as more compete for the same jobs.
The public will become increasingly bitter about company execs ripping them off with loans and golden parachutes.
The public will cry for tighter immigration laws as unemployment rises. Government entitlements will start to crush the economy as taxes will have to rise to compensate for all the government payola on the books. Rather than make some hard decisions, Congress will continue to play a shell game.

John, Re <<It's not that easy to find jobs in this market>>

They will get a "fair" pay for their skills. Market will determine that.

If AMD has no need for them, they must go. It is harsh, but is the reality of free market capitalism. It also has very little to do with the short term "stock pop of twenty cents per share". It lowers cost and it keeps AMD in business thus employing many thousands more. AMD should take care of them with fair severance packages and employment placement services. If they don't, they will have harder time to attract quality candidates when it is time to hire. So there is incentive for AMD to be fair.
