The metric I use for that is short ratio....a short ratio over 5 is VERY high, and indicates that 5 days worth of float is held by shorts. 3-5 is a "flashing yellow", ie, fairly high and worthy of consideration when one is thinking of shorting a stock. Under 3 and it's probably not a major concern in a stocks movement.
