Cisco said third quarter research and development costs fell to $807 million from $970 million in the year earlier period. Likewise, sales and marketing expenses dropped to about $1.06 billion from $1.33 billion.

Cisco's cash and short-term equivalents rose to $6.49 billion from $4.87 billion at July 28, when fiscal 2001 ended. Deferred revenue fell to $711 million from $744 million at the end of fiscal 2001.

Last year's third quarter included about $1.17 billion worth of pretax costs for restructuring and other charges, $2.25 billion for excess inventory, $181 million for goodwill amortization and $109 million for inprocess research and development.
