I think it is reprehensible that a single mother with two teens who is working two jobs to make ends meet paid more income taxes than Enron the corporation did for four of the past five years. It's obscene that Rosie the Riveter paid more taxes than Enron the corporation, while at the same time Kenny Boy was flying GWB around the country in his personal jet.

Paying no income taxes whatsoever for four of the past five years (Enron) is not paying one's "fair share." I think we can both agree on that.

It takes money to build upon our democracy. It takes money to buy tanks, cruise missiles, build VA hospitals, provide Social Security benefits for the 75-year-old widow in Paducah. It takes money to provide college grants for needy, qualified students who want to move up in the world. It takes money to provide kindergarten kids with free breakfasts so they are able to learn.

What we have, in fact, are two separate issues:

(1) Paying one's fair share to keep America great.

(2) What exactly constitutes a "fair share."

Companies that set up HQ in Bermuda are not paying their "fair share" to keep America great. End of discussion.

What constitutes a "fair share" is a different issue. I don't know if 33 percent is "more fair" than 36 percent. I am somewhat flexible on this point.

Maybe it's time for a business flat tax. Every corporation in America pays something ... at the same rate. The only way you catch a tax break is if you add jobs, build a new plant, etc.
