What you seem to not understand that once published in the Times it becomes part of a public record should all this ever get to the negotiating table. Arafat has taken a public step backward into the language of "symbolic". He has to deal with that language when he engages in any negotiating.

John, Arafat has put many statements on the "public record", not least of which were his promises to renounce terrorism and promote reconciliation, and abide by the Oslo accords. Those words have never bothered him, why should these?
