first of fund managers are not hedge fund managers. The expertise in hedge funds is far superior to mutual funds. The issue of beating the street is not the strategy of the hedgefund, it is to manage risk and even out return. My fund(I invest in) was up 8.45% after fees last year, not to shabby considering the enviroment. There were funds up 30-40% last year as well.
