The main impetus to increasing Jewish immigration into Palestine was fleeing the Nazis, or seeking somewhere to live as a displaced person after the war. For the most part, the immigration was legal under international standards, and whatever the occasional irregularities, they are surely forgivable under the circumstances. Sure, the Jews could have all lined up for the cattle cars, or waited many more years for resettlement, but the Zionists offered something better. Meanwhile, the Arabs largely admired the Nazis, and decided that a non- Arab state was intolerable in "Arab lands". Their hostility made a binational solution impossible, and the war that ensued upon independence (which had UN sanction) made an orderly disposition of claims impossible. Did some Israelis behave badly? Probably. But it was the Arab League that vowed to drive the Jews into the sea first, and resisted UN mediation. Given the circumstances of Israel's creation, those who will not concede its right to exist are, as far as I can see, anti- semites, not merely anti- Zionist. As for the West Bank, it would still be Jordanian if the Arab powers had not insisted on attacking Israel periodically, and even Likud floated the idea of an Israeli- Jordanian condominium over an autonomous West Bank. Finally, Arafat was offered a very good deal a couple of years ago, rejected it, and covertly encouraged Intifada II, hoping for more leverage and an even better deal. Then the suicide bombings began. Now, it seems to me that anyone who understands that Israel has to defend itself will be cautious in making criticism, not being on the front line personally. Otherwise, they are certainly jerks, and probably anti- semitic. Why anti- semitic? Because they think that Jews are obliged to sit still while suicide bombers attack civilians, which is tantamount to saying that they should have walked into the gas chamber instead of seeking refuge in Palestine, because it happened under a "colonialist international order", and that they were responsible for implacable Arab hostility because they had the temerity to settle the land legally, and to defend themselves when attacked. If there were Israeli atrocities, they pale beside the stream of indecencies that have been committed in the name of an Arab Palestine throughout the years........
