Moody's cuts Georgia-Pacific to 'junk' status
By Tomi Kilgore
05/08/2002 10:34

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moody's Investors Service lowered its rating on the senior unsecured debt of Georgia-Pacific to a speculative-grade "Ba1" from "Baa3" due to the weak near-term outlook for the paper company's commodity products, which Moody's believes will impede the company's ability to reduce debt. The debt rating agency also cited long-term uncertainty surrounding asbestos liability and the "significantly greater" financial strength of its competitors for the downgrade. G-P's stock is trading down 79 cents at $29.06, after being up as much as 38 cents at $30.23 earlier in the session.
