I hear you. Its nice to be able to point to something concrete in return after the market or your job extracts its price.

I used to do a whole lot of work for Ryland Homes. While I think they build lousy houses, I made a ton of money working for them and so did my biggest client. We used to joke that we were able to buy real houses with the money we made working for them. I got back every dime I paid in social security doing work for them and I got back every dime I paid in utility bills with one big job from BG&E. Every dime I put into computer gear came back to me from buying INTC stock.

Somewhere there is this big ledger book and so far I think I'm breaking even.
