And this is exactly what AMD will do too. Remember that last year, there was about a 50-50 split between Athlon and Duron. Now the Athlon (k7) becomes "Duron" and the hammer (k8) becomes "Athlon". And once again, AMD ramps to a roughly a 50-50 split between a large die performance product aka Athlon (k8) and a smaller die value product aka Duron (k7). After next year, the k7 will no longer be competitive - even in the value space - and AMD will transition to value processors based on the K8 core.
