I tend to agree with you on options. I find that my bid will hang around for a while, finally it will get filled and then the price will continue to drop past my bid. It's like the ask is kept up until my bid is no longer a bargain and then they fill it. Anyone notice something similar?

The MM's do not normally fill you at the bid. When the price moves your limit price towards the ask, you get filled. If you want a quick fill at a good price, QQQ will often fill in the middle of the bid/ask spread, but that is only due to the liquidity of that issue. SMH has big spreads, and you'll probably only get filled when your price is near the ask when buying.
