Just reading the article. It goes as follows

The Sony official also said the new machine will need an equally super-speed memory bandwidth interface. He said HyperTransport designed by an Advanced Micro Devices-promoted consortium "may be a candidate, but at this time we have made no decision."

Now that sounds like they are looking at using HTT as the memory interface itself, not just as an FSB equivalent. True, it would require custom memory chips, but I guess they feel they have the volume. Besides, as far as I know, they were the only buyer of the original RDRAMs for the PS1.
