If Sun tries to collaborate with AMD it will make intel and the Dell folks very very happy.

Re: Here's to looking forward to 8-way Opteron based Sun servers under the Christmas Tree by year end

Nope. Clawhammer (Athlon-64) under the christmas tree.

The 8-way Opterons are late Q2 or early Q3.

Because their memory bandwidth scales with the number of processors, and thanks to their low-latency on-die memory controllers, they'll have performance better than 16-way Intel servers - Xeon or Itanium.

Because their glueless logic doesn't require a complex and expensive chipset, their cost will be about that of a 4-way Intel Xeon server or a 2-way Itanium server.

Remember what a revelation on-die cache was? You'll see the same kind of segment topping performance increase from the on-die memory controller.
