I think it is an "energizer" issue rather than a "Fencesetter" one, John.

Definitely not around here. The district just north of mine has been represented forever by Marg Roukema. She's retiring. One of the aspirants is a far righter. Should his folk get energized and get the nomination for him, the Dems pick up the seat. Northern Bergen County is old Rockefeller Republican territory at best. The quickest most believable person to the center wins.

I expect the same is true for Nancy Johnson's seat in Conn. I don't think she's retiring but I think she's been on DeLay's hit list for sometime, just as Roukema was during the last election or two. Also, the Conn rep who was the last to sign on Clinton's impeachment, who was big on campaign finance reform. His seat will be in jeapordy. I also think one of the Westchester County seats is occupied by a Republican.

Given the propensity for the incumbents to hang onto their seats, this kind of balance tipping is a genuine problem.
