Yes, that does sound quite odd. If they don't show up this year, you'd almost have to wonder if something bad has happened to the birds from your area while they were in their winter area, or enroute to or from there. Catastrophes definitely happen to some populations of migrating birds, which is one reason that a lot of researchers are trying to learn more about migration routes and wintering areas for various bird species.
