Ron: There are a couple of problems with the story you posted. First of all, as far as I can determine, the source for this story is newsmax.com. Newsmax.com is an extremely partisan, ultra-right-wing Web site, which more often than not twists the facts so as to produce a story that will appeal to its readers. Clear example is the bogus Hillary Clinton-Gold Star Moms story that was first posted on newsmax.com, then widely distributed by e-mail three or so months ago. It was so far from the truth that the Gold Star Moms even put up a disclaimer on their Web site.

The Miami story first was reported by WSVN, a TV station in Miami. I tracked down the story on the TV station's Web site and found a fairly weak story (along with numerous misspellings). For instance, the reporter never even bothered to find out what the official policy is in such matters. Are these workers in fact required to learn Spanish, since most of the people they serve speak Spanish? Had this worker been given a deadline to at least develop basic bilingual phone skills? (I had a relative who taught school in Texas and she had to learn a little Spanish, even though the "official" language at the school was English.)

There's more to this story than than was reported, just as there was with the Hillary Clinton-Gold Star Moms story.

Re: your headline "The New America courtesy of the left" ... I would point out that the Hispanic community in Miami voted solidly Republican in '00.
