Hsinchu, Taiwan, May 9 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's biggest maker of chips for other companies, said it will double its capacity by 2006 to meet rising demand for chips that power mobile phones and other consumer electronics products.

The company, which plans to spend NT$90 billion ($2.6 billion) this year, said most of the money will be used to expand capacity that uses the most advanced technology. Taiwan Semiconductor also plans to invest more in advanced chip-assembly technology to ensure that process does not create a bottleneck during the production process.

``Our commitment to customers, especially in advanced technology, will continue to improve,'' President Rick Tsai said at a technology conference in Hsinchu.

Demand for communications chips is rising, while demand from the computer industry is almost flat, the company said.
