It's been a long time, but I'm pretty sure a synthetic lease is a capital lease. With capital leases you have to restrict cash alot of times due to the contract, and for all intensive purposes it's a purchase. So you also have to disclose the future obligations on the lease. Anyway, it's all legal and GAAP, but Cisco got rid of it to avoid even the appearance of impropriety, which tells you that management really is reactive to public opinion.
