As somebody who used to manage some of the service offerings for Pavilion PCs, I can tell you that it's not much different. Options I've seen are:

* Send the PC in and hope it gets fixed, fully expecting to lose your data.

* Have a guy come out to service it, hope they send the right parts and that he actually shows up when expected.

* Take it to an authorized repair station (CompUSA or similar).

None of these have ever been all that satisfactory.
