OK- Country Boy,
What's the difference between lightning bugs and fireflies? I have always used those names interchangeably.
Many years ago my brother lived on a creek that filled with fireflies in the evening. His two boys, who were terrible hellions, used to try to paint themselves with the phosphorescence and be Glow-in-the-Dark Indians. I, still unmarried and unused to the callous primitive nature of the male child, was horrified and told them that the stuff was poisonous, and even if they didn't die, they would be brain-damaged, but they never believed me.
They are probably responsible for any current dearth of lightning bugs in Virginia.
