You're absolutely correct about the discrimination experienced by the Irish. "No Irish Need Apply" was a common sign in 19th century America. The history of "liberty" in the United States is not a pretty one for those who were born disenfranchised ... or female, for that matter.

Hi KLP. What a coincidence. My first american ancestor (a scot from clan colquohoun) was captured by Cromwells army in 1651 (52?) at the age of 17 and sent to Rhode Island (Block Island to be exact) to work the mines. He was indentured for many years (I think around 10) before gaining his freedom and marrying.

I am damn glad he ended up here.

Think I have a case against the crown for reparations? I mean, heck, being the descendant of a former slave is quite a stigma to carry around.
