Agree that the federal budget needs a boost, but the recent legislative trend has leaned toward helping people have better retirements and toward helping them die with more money (i.e., reduction in parameters for estate taxes, allowing higher amounts to be contributed to IRAs, etc.).

This, of course, is because the Social Security system is very screwed up and the government doesn't want a bunch of homeless/penniless seniors on its hands, so it has to allow them to accumulate savings in other ways.

That's why I can't see any legislation coming down the pike that will hurt the bottom line for seniors, such as a cap gains tax increase on home sales. I guess I'd have to vote for a reduction in mortgage-interest deductions instead. <g>
