SGI is focusing on mostly their current customers. 2. SGI has incentivised selling based on margin. This seems a contradiction in selling a linux box. bill, fred, sam and all their cousins are selling Linux boxes. So show me the margin baby. Also the large companies are a little more conservative and are not early adopters and tend to stick with what works. What improvement in anything does a system based on itanics melting lead a 120 watts per processor have over mips processors at 15 watts. The additional bad news is that a 32 processor 300 series in 20 or so U makes obsolete all 3000 series severs below 64. The 300 series is such a great engine that I don't think SGI I has a clue how to sell them. No one knows they exist IMHO. Other than IBM, who may have made money, can you think of anyone who has made money selling Linux boxes. Off course IBM like the rest of the computer industry is hurting now and I don't think the fact that IBM started losing money about the time they started selling Linux boxes has correlation.
