TAIPEI, Taiwan -- More evidence of a rebound in silicon foundry demand came from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and United Microelectronics Corp. today, which separately reported strong sequential increases in revenues for April over March. For TSMC, April sales were significantly higher than a year ago for the first time since the severe downturn hit the foundry business in 2001.

TSMC's net sales sequentially increased 8.9% to NT$13.37 billion ($382 million) last month compared to NT$12.28 billion, while UMC's revenues surged 15.2% to NT5.24 billion ($150 million) from NT$4.55 billion in March. For both Taiwan chip foundries April was the second month in a row for sequential sales increases after a slight dip in the holiday-shortened February month this year.
