Tokyo Electron Posts 4th-Qtr Loss as Sales Plunge (Update1)

Tokyo, May 10 (Bloomberg) -- Tokyo Electron Ltd., the world's No. 2 manufacturer of chipmaking equipment, turned to a fourth quarter loss as sales tumbled when chipmakers cut spending during the industry's worst-ever performance last year.

The Tokyo-based company reported a group loss of 11.8 billion yen ($92 million) in the three months ended March 31, compared with group net income of 13 billion yen a year earlier. Sales plunged 53 percent to 101 billion yen from 214 billion yen.

For the full-year, the company reported a group loss of 19.9 billion yen, or 113.85 yen a share, in the year ended March 31, compared with net income of 62 billion yen, or 353.76 yen, a year earlier. Sales tumbled 42 percent to 418 billion yen.

For the year ending March 31, 2003, the company estimates group net income of 3 billion yen on sales of 463 billion yen.

The company said it expects a first-half loss of 4.8 billion yen on sales of 210.5 billion yen.
