Another thing about hummingbird feeders. They need to be kept very clean. In warm weather, I wash the feeders and change the solution every couple of days as mold and mildew can grow on them. To make things easier, I keep spare feeders so that I can get them very clean before filling, and then I just swap them around with the empty feeders each time I'm doing the refill thing. And I make my sugar-water mix as 1 part sugar to 4 parts boiling water and I don't use red food colouring as all of the feeders are red plastic and the birds know where and what they are.

Ah, you dash another of my long held beliefs.

I was brought up as a child believing that you needed to put red food coloring in the sugar water for hummingbirds. Still do it.

Now we'll see whether I'm too old to learn a new trick.
